I’ve recently switched from commuting by car to using the train. This has worked well (4 inches lost from my waist in 4 months), but I had a technology problem. I wanted something I could work on while on the train, but it needed to be somewhere between my phone which is fine for reading and listening to podcasts, and my 14.5” laptop which is too big to use on the many days I’m at a seat without a table.

I did of course look at various netbooks and tablets, but they weren’t the answer. Tablets need two hands and are not nice to use on a table, and the good ones are expensive. You also don’t have a proper keyboard. The Android-running ASUS Transformer looked OK, but had no size advantages over a netbook, limited software and is very expensive. Both netbooks and tablets are in general too big, too – 10” screens with large bezels – definitely not pocketable.
